Destroyer —- Leave Me Alone (New Order cover)
Leave Me Alone is my favorite New Order song, so when I read that Destroyer was covering it, I was slightly concerned. Given that Dan Bejar is just coming off of Kaputt, I was afraid it was going to sound like an over-produced, nostalgic 80’s facsimile. Instead, it’s a fairly straightforward version of the song (with an odd spoken-word intro that almost works). There’s something fitting about Bejar telling us that “you get these words wrong every time,” given his penchant for verbose, deliberately confounding, self-referential lyrics. The cover doesn’t quite reach the same melancholy high of the original, but it stands on its own two feet strongly enough.
